Find a consultant by function

One of the salient features of the financial crisis in the public sector, – and particularly in the NHS – has been the interest it has engendered in the value, quality and role of management in the health service. Consequently, this has turned attention to the challenge of improving leadership capacity at all levels and in particular sub board management. With the service about to enter a period of unprecedented financial challenge, and to embark on reforms to services and systems, equipping healthcare organisations with talented people to oversee change, now and into the future, is understood as being a key determinant of success.

This is of particular importance to us at Odgers Select; our business is all about seeking out high-performing and high-potential individuals at sub-board management levels, so we have a real contribution to make to the continuity of reform, the improvement of service quality and organisational performance by attracting and placing the leaders of the future. The people we find – often with skills and experiences not traditionally found inside healthcare organisations, in emerging areas such as communications, marketing, business development and organisational change – will develop their leadership capability inside the service, and take on the future challenges of strategic leadership of the healthcare organisations.

Tomorrow’s leaders are increasingly expected to demonstrate – today – commercial acumen, the ability to be an inspirational manager of teams, an understanding of and commitment to improving service-level quality and performance, whilst reducing costs. A system-wide perspective on a given organisation’s strategic challenges and operating environment is also increasingly required. As headhunters, we’re sensitive, too, to the need for an “X Factor” in the people we present to our clients. Our commitment to bringing excellent people into roles means we’re looking for individuals with a distinctive personal style, a natural enthusiasm and energy and a desire to have a lasting, positive impact on a role, an organisation or a project. These qualities, as much as the experiential and formal qualifications on the CV, will serve to convince potential employers that they have before them a potential future leader worth investing in.
